Witnesses to History - Stories from Park View Cemetery
Written by John Abney, this book is a history of Park View Cemetery and those buried there. It began as a paupers' cemetery in the 1850s and was then used extensively for Union burials during the Civil War years. When the soldiers' remains were removed to Jefferson Barracks in the years after the war, the cemetery became the main burial place for African American residents of the Arcadia Valley.
Besides detailing the history of the cemetery, Abney's extensive research documented over 300 burials in the cemetery and also documented all known African American burials in cemeteries throughout Iron County. It also contains the rich story of brothers Solomon and Moses Lax who escaped slavery as teenagers, followed the Union Army back to Pilot Knob in 1862, and eventually made their lives and livelihoods in the Arcadia Valley. Soft cover, comb bound, 101 pages.
